Jim Keller, an engineer who worked at AMD, AppleAND Tesla and is now the CEO of one The start of the AI chip taking over Nvidiasays Nvidia is “becoming the IBM of the AI era.”
In an episode of Sunday's podcast DemystifySciKeller brought Nvidia's AI chips and drew attention to companies like Microsoft AND Google that are using Nvidia technology to power their innovations.
“All the big tech companies are in an arms race and they're all calling Nvidia,” Keller said.

He then said that Nvidia is “slowly becoming the IBM of the AI age,” adding, “We'll see how it goes. I run an AI technology company, so I have thoughts on that as well.”

Nvidia is now the industry leader for AI chips, with over 80% of market share. Benefit from one first mover advantage in AI computing; Nvidia claims to have started investing in AI and machine learning development since 2006.
IBM, too, can be considered a first mover in the PC market. Although IBM did not invent the PC, the company did 1981 personal desktop opened computers to a wider audience and generated 1 billion dollars in revenue in the first year.

Keller has previously weighed in on the cost of AI chips, both from Nvidia and ChatGPT maker OpenAI, which currently uses Nvidia chips. He claimed in APRIL that Nvidia could have cut R&D costs and in February that he could build AI processors for all AI workloads and companies at one-eighth the cost suggested by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in March that its next-generation AI chip would cost more than 30 thousand dollars.
