SCS Financial, a $30 billion registered investment advisor sold to Focus Financial Partners in 2017, it tapped Lane MacDonald, the former head of Fidelity's family office, as its new chief investment officer. Separately, Certuity, a $4 billion RIA in North Palm Beach, Fla., has brought on Scott Welch, formerly CIO at Dynasty Financial Partners, as its CIO.
MacDonald takes up his post on July 1 and will be based in Boston. He succeeds Steve Oristaglio, who recently retired. Prior to joining SCS, he was president and chief investment officer at FMR Diversified Investments, managing Fidelity's proprietary portfolios. Prior to that, he was at Harvard Management Company in various roles, including head of the private equity team and the public market team. Previously, he was a professional hockey player and competed in the 1988 Olympics and was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
At SCS, he will be responsible for the firm's asset allocation and tactical adjustments, portfolio construction, manager selection and due diligence. He will also lead a team of 20 investment professionals across all asset classes.
Earlier this year, Focus bought out the SCS management team as part of its central strategy to consolidate other RIAs, according to published reports.
Welch joins Certuity from The Tree of Knowledge, where he was CIO of the company's model portfolio and served on the asset allocation and investment committees. He succeeds Dylan Kremer, who left the RIA this month to join IEQ Capital, according to regulatory filings.
Prior to WisdomTree, Welch was CIO at Dynasty. He is also a co-founder and CIO of Fortigent, a wealth management platform provider acquired by LPL Financial in 2012.
