TikTok ban bill becomes law, gives TikTok 9 months to sell


US Senate PASSED a multibillion-dollar package on Tuesday that included foreign aid along with legislation forcing TikTok to split from its Beijing-based parent company within a year — or face a national ban. President Biden made the law official, signing it Wednesday.

Prompted by national security concernsbill gives TikTok owner ByteDance nine months to sell the popular social media platform, which boasts over 150 million users in the US ByteDance can take an additional three months to complete the order if a TikTok sale is underway, bringing the maximum time TikTok has to be sold or shut down to a year.

TikTok is still there guaranteed to be available throughout the election cycle of this year; January 2025 is the earliest a ban could begin.

An earlier version of the TikTok ban PASSED House in March, but stalled in the Senate. That release gave TikTok just six months to come to terms with the split from ByteDance.

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives decided to include the TikTok bill in the $95 billion bill high priority packet last week to increase the chances of the bill passing the Senate this time.

It worked: The Senate voted to approve the bill 79-18 Tuesday night. President Biden TOLD that he will sign it into law and did so on Wednesday.

TikTok has tall denied that is sharing US data with China and is already preparing to oppose the bill on free speech or First Amendment grounds.

“At the point the bill is signed, we will be moving to the courts for a legal challenge,” Michael Beckerman, TikTok's head of public policy for the Americas, wrote in a memo sent to employees on Saturday, obtained by Associated Press. “This is the beginning, not the end of this long process.”

Regarding last monthTikTok is also under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission over its data access practices.
