Infamous 'Titanic' wood panel fetches thousands at auction

“Can Jack fit in the door” is a very Google phrase and there is countless threads on Reddit dedicated to one of the most infamously debated scenarios in pop culture.

In the 1997 classic, “Titanic” Jack (spoiler alert) dies in the water after being unable to climb onto the wooden panel that Rose is floating on. But whether or not he had enough room has had people debating for decades. Even the writer and director of the film, James Cameron, weighed.

Now, that famous, floating piece of wood is still generating buzz nearly 27 years later — but this time for a pricey reason.

Heritage auctions announced that had sold the iconic prop at an auction last week for $718,000 as part of a five-day run that featured costumes and props previously shown at Planet Hollywood, including Indiana Jones' whip and bowling ball from the “Kingpin.”

“Often mistakenly referred to as a door, the ornate structure was actually part of the door frame just above the entrance to the first class lounge,” Heritage Auctions wrote. “The iconic proposal has sparked much debate from fans, many of whom have argued that the floating wooden panel could have supported Jack and Rose – making his fateful decision to stand in the cold water an empty gesture.”

The paneling is made of balsa wood and features curves and floral accents that are typical of the Rococo architecture that would have been popular in 1912 when the ship sank.

The infamous prop was created as a replica of a real piece of debris recovered from the wreckage of the Titanic.

Most of the Hollywood props, dubbed “Treasures of Planet Hollywood,” closed on March 25 and got an estimated 15.6 million dollars. It is the second most expensive auction of Hollywood props and costumes.

The current reigning Hollywood auction champion is 2011's Debbie Reynolds, which was held by Joe Maddalena and fetched $22.8 million.
