Five guys clash over high prices, bill goes viral

Several burger joints have come under fire on social media for recent price hikes, and the latest to come under fire is popular chain Five Guys.

An image of a customer's bill is going viral on X and has received over 25.2 million views so far, according to the platform.

“Five Guys prices are out of control,” user @WallStreetSilv captioned a photo of a $24.10 bill for one person that included a $12.49 bacon cheeseburger and an order of 5 small fries. $19 with a drink and sales tax.

“I think I was expecting about $12 to $15 per person for Five Guys,” the user wrote. “What's the right amount these days?”

Viewers were shocked by the total, complaining that fast food chain prices have reached an “unaffordable” high.

“$5 for a small fry is highway robbery,” said one user. “It's literally just a potato and some salt. Cost them a quarter to make it.”

“This is why I don't go to Five Guys anymore, not because I can't afford it, but because you have to draw the line at some point,” said another.

According to MoneyGeekthe average price of a Five Guys meal in 2022 was $19.95.

In one the last interviewDirector of Operations-APAC at Five Guys International, Iain Ross-Mackenzie, explained that the higher prices were due to the company's use of fresh ingredients.

“We want to put control back in the consumer's pocket,” said Iain. “Nothing is frozen. We only use fresh ingredients.”

Earlier this year, McDonald's was criticized for the price hike, and rival chain Wendy's revealed it would be experimenting with a “dynamic” pricing model.

Five Guys did not immediately respond of the entrepreneur request for comment.
