Sam Altman returns as CEO, OpenAI has a new home plate

I am returning to OpenAI as CEO. Mira will return to her role as technical director. The new initial board will consist of Bret Taylor (Chairman), Larry Summers and Adam D'Angelo.

I have never been more excited about the future. I am extremely grateful to everyone for their hard work in an uncertain and unprecedented situation and I believe that our resilience and spirit have set us apart in the industry. I feel so, so good about our likelihood of success in achieving our mission.

Before I move on to what follows, I would like to thank you.

I love and respect Ilja, I think he is a guiding light and a gem of a human being. I bear no ill will towards him. Although Ilya will no longer be a board member, we hope to continue our working relationship and discuss how he can continue his work at OpenAI.

I am grateful to Adam, Tasha, and Helena for working with us to come up with this solution that best serves the mission. I'm excited to continue working with Adam and I'm truly grateful to Helen and Tasha for putting so much effort into this process.

Thanks also to Emmett who played a key and constructive role in helping us reach this outcome. Emmett's commitment to AI security and balancing stakeholder interests was clear.

Mira has done an amazing job through it all, selflessly serving the mission, the team and the company. She is an amazing leader and OpenAI wouldn't be OpenAI without her. Thank you.

Greg and I are partners in running this company. We've never figured out how to translate that to an org chart, but we will. In the meantime, I just wanted to clarify. Thank you for everything you've done from the start and how you've handled things since this started and over the past week.

The leadership team – Mira, Brad, Jason, Che, Hannah, Diane, Anna, Bob, Srinivas, Matt, Lilian, Miles, Jan, Wojciech, John, Jonathan, Pat and many others – is clearly ready to run the company without us. They say one way to judge a CEO is how you select and train your potential successors; by that metric I'm doing far better than I thought. It's clear to me that the company is in good hands, and I hope that's clear to everyone. Thanks everyone.

Jakub, Szymon and Aleksander are exceptional talents and I am so happy that they have rejoined to move us and our research forward. Thank you.

To all of you, our team: I'm sure books will be written about this time period and I hope the first to say how amazing the entire team was. Now that we've gone through all this, we haven't lost a single employee. You stood firmly by each other, by this company and by our mission. One of the most important things for a team building an AGI securely is the ability to deal with stressful and uncertain situations and maintain good judgment throughout the process. Best grades. Thanks everyone.

Satya, Kevin, Amy and Brad have been amazing partners throughout this, with their priorities straight. They had our backs and were ready to meet all of us if we didn't achieve our primary goal. We clearly made the right choice to partner with Microsoft and I'm excited that our new board will include them as non-voting observers. Thank you.

To our partners and users, we thank you for staying with us. We have really felt an outpouring of support and love and it has helped us all get through this. The fact that we haven't lost a single client will encourage us to work even harder for you and we're all excited to get back to work.

Will Hurd, Brian Chesky, Bret Taylor and Larry Summers put their lives on the line and did incredible things to support the mission. I don't know how they did it so well, but they really did. Thank you.

Ollie also put his life on hold throughout to do whatever he could to help, along with offering his usual unconditional love and support. Thank you and I love you.

What's next?

We have three current priorities.

Advancing our research agenda and further investing in our safety efforts, which have always been central to our work. Our research plan is clear; this was a wonderful time of focus. I share the excitement you all feel; we will turn this crisis into an opportunity! I will work with Mira on this.

We continue to improve and implement our products and serve our customers. It is important that people experience the benefits and promises of artificial intelligence and have the opportunity to shape it. We still believe that great products are the best way to do that. I will work with Brad, Jason and Anna to ensure our unwavering commitment is clear to customers, clients, partners and governments around the world.

Bret, Larry and Adam will be working hard on the extremely important task of building a board with diverse perspectives, improving our governance structure and overseeing an independent review of recent developments. I look forward to working closely with them on these key steps so that everyone can be confident in the stability of OpenAI.

I'm so looking forward to completing the work of building useful AGI with all of you—the best team in the world, the best mission in the world.

Love,

Himself
