What's the big AI announcement happening this month?
OpenAI is said to announce an AI breakthrough in the coming weeks — AI that can do Ph.D.-level tasks, potentially replacing complex human work, Axios reported on Sunday. CEO Sam Altman has scheduled a closed-door meeting with the US government in Washington DC on January 30, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed earlier this month that Meta is working on an AI, likely arriving this year, that could replace mid-level engineers at the company.
“Maybe in 2025, we at Meta, as well as other companies that are basically working on this, will have an AI that can effectively be a kind of mid-level engineer that you have in your company that can write code ,” Zuckerberg. said Joe Rogan.

In the interview, Zuckerberg said that Meta is working toward a time when “a lot of the code in our apps and including the artificial intelligence that we generate will actually be built by AI engineers instead of human engineers.”

Is AI Replacing Tech Jobs?
Meta also announced earlier this month, in a note written by Zuckerberg and obtained by Bloombergthat it would cut about 5% of its 72,000-strong staff. However, AI will not replace those roles just yet. Zuckerberg said Meta aims to fill the affected roles in 2025 or hire new employees to fill vacancies from those leaving by the end of the year.
However, Meta isn't the first Big Tech company to tout AI's coding capabilities. In one October earnings callGoogle CEO Sundar Pichai stated this more than a quarter all new code at Google is “generated by AI, then reviewed and accepted by our engineers.”
“It helps our engineers do more and move faster,” Pichai said.
And it's not just technology – banks are using AI to replace human labor too. In March, JPMorgan Chase claimed that its free cash flow intelligence tool helped cut human manual labor by 90%. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon declared in July that AI would eliminate bank jobs, especially in the customer service department, but also add jobs.
According to one June survey conducted by Duke University and the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and Richmond, more than 60% of large US companies plan to use AI within a year to take over tasks previously performed by human workers.
