Apple first released Siri 13 years ago. Now the iPhone maker is preparing to rework its personal voice assistant to keep up with powerful AI chatbots like ChatGPT.
According to one The Bloomberg report was released Thursday citing people familiar with the matter, Apple is preparing to launch a new Siri that is more conversational and quicker to answer complex questions.
The voice assistant will be able to fast forward. It is trained on more advanced large language models (LLM), leading insiders to call it “LLM Siri”. A LLM is an AI system that processes large amounts of text in order to understand and generate the text itself.
An announcement about the change could happen as early as next year, with the new Siri not expected to hit the market until spring 2026.
Apple isn't trying to be the first to bring AI features to market; the company is taking a slow and steady approach to AI. When you advertise one early Apple Intelligence update, Apple stated that AI text message summaries and AI writing help were all part of Apple's effort to make “HE for the rest of us.”
Apple gave Siri a new look with iOS 18.1 update released at the end of October. Instead of an orb at the bottom of the screen, Siri now takes the form of a light that wraps around the edges of the iPhone screen. The light moves in response to the speaker's voice.
Siri is also gradually starting to understand more context, though not quite yet demonstrated by ChatGPT-4othat OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed in May has “human-level reaction time and expressiveness.” Siri is getting there: As of the iOS 18.1 update, Siri can handle pauses and hesitations in speech. If someone says, “Siri set a reminder—wait, I meant an alarm,” Siri won't stop working and set the alarm instead. The voice assistant can now also process typed commands.
Siri's updates so far have been “cosmetic” and pave the way for a new voice assistant similar to ChatGPT, according to Bloomberg.
Apple shipped 231 million iPhones worldwide last year. Apple's intelligence in smartphones only applies in the line of iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
