The wealthiest and safest places to retire in the US


Although one in five US adults is 50 or older no retirement savingsthose who have amassed a comfortable nest egg – which most American workers believe to be at least $1.8 million — have some flexibility when it comes to where they spend it golden years.

More than 338,000 US residents retired for a new home in 2023, a 44% increase compared to 2022, according to a report from the online moving services market Hire an Assistant.

Most of retirees moving out of state chose Florida (11%) and South Carolina (10%), according to the data. Florida and other southern states often attract retirees with year-round warm weather and affordable living costs.

However, Americans with greater than average retirement accounts they may gravitate towards places where wealth and security are defining factors.

GoBankingRates set out to determine the wealthiest and safest cities for retirees analyzing data from the US Census' American Community Survey, Sperling's Best Places, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Survey of Consumer Expenditures.

GoBankingRates only included cities where at least 25% of the population was 65 or older in its analysis. Each city's livability score was calculated by AreaVibes and the average of a single household the value of the house from the Zillow Home Value Index for September 2024.

The study found that Oro Valley, Arizona, ranks as the wealthiest and safest city for retirees and that six other Arizona cities rank in the top 30: Prescott, Lake Havasu City, Scottsdale, Prescott Valley, Apache Junction and Bullhead City.

Additionally, 12 of the wealthiest and safest retirement cities are in California: Rancho Palos Verdes, Lincoln, Laguna Woods, Walnut Creek, Novato, La Quinta, Seal Beach, Rancho Mirage, Cerritos, Banning, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs.
