There is a lot of career advice out there. Most of it is missing the mark or completely out of date. The workplace has changed so much since 2020, and our methodology must adapt. With so many choices to be made for your career, both short-term and long-term, I'm a fan of simplicity.
The only career advice you need to follow is choosing which of these three lanes you currently fall into and how they will shape up. your career progression. They include:

- Learning — Adaptation of new skills, certificates, diplomas and mentoring.
- EARNINGS — Focused on earning potential, status, networking and growth.
- The coast — Go with the flow; it allows you to focus on other things and recharge.
You can choose one or two of these lanes at a time, and switching from one to another is also fine. Many factors affect your lane, including the season of your career, life changes and how much energy you should bring. I use this approach over other career advice because it is timeless and can help put you in the right mindset for the next set of choices you have to make.
None of these choices are FAIR one. The beauty is that you can choose which options work best for you. Sometimes, I identify that I am in a phase of needing to learn and gain. Other times, I get it I have to coast for a multitude of reasons. Sometimes, I need to switch to recharge so that I can learn and earn better in the near future. Sometimes, personal events have to take priority, which results in my coast.
So which lane are you currently in? Here's how to help identify where I am and what I need to move on to:
- Learning — This is your patient phase, but proactive. You trust the process and invest in yourself. You can see the potential.
- EARNINGS – This is “why not me?” Take all you've learned and achieved and apply it to your next career leap.
- Assess whether there is earning potential in your current job.
- If there is, book a meeting with the decision maker as soon as possible.
- If not, it's time to work.
- If the opportunity at your current job isn't a good fit (whether it's timing, scope of work, salary, etc…), it's time to job-hop.
- the coast – This is your chance to rest. Career growth it's not always linear, so if you need to take a foot off the gas pedal to research your next step or focus on personal matters, this is your time!
When you feel stuck or need help figuring out where to move forward, look at which lanes you currently fall into and assess whether this is the right path to progress. Especially with your career, consider looking for work if you don't see a path to more opportunities.
You will always need more earning opportunities in your current job. This is natural and an indication of your success.

As a fellow Gen Z, I can say with confidence that we see promotion as today's promotion. The days of waiting for your employer are long gone, when there are many other opportunities up for grabs. The opportunity cost of staying with an employer that no longer aligns with your career goals has never been higher.
