Talk about a Philly special.

While some business leaders postpone for four days work week or adopt hybrid office shifts after a change in workplace preferences after the pandemic, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker has doubled traditionally — requiring all 26,000 city employees to return to the office five days a week, starting Monday.

The new order was signed Friday by Judge Sierra Thomas Street. Unions in the city requested the postponement of the new mandate, but were met with opposition.

“On July 15, in the middle of summer, people are trying to find child care, trying to find summer camps,” said April Gigetts, president of District 47 Council in Philadelphia. NPR.

Parker asserted that the decision was made so that the city of Philadelphia and its government “create a more visible and accessible government, a city government that our residents can see, touch and feel.”

Philadelphia Chief Administrative Officer Camille Duchaussee said the decision was not made because of a lack of productivity, but based on an overarching “leadership” strategy.

“We want to make sure that we continue to build the culture and experience that is positive in the workplace,” Duchaussee said in a statement. “We understand that working from home is something that our employees were participating in, but we all have a common goal and our workforce is committed to that common goal.”

Philadelphia is the first major American city to pass such a mandate.

Philly isn't alone in cracking down on work time frames for city employees.

Earlier this month, Greece passed a mandate requiring a six-day work week for employees working for private businesses and 24-hour manufacturing plants, including some retail and agricultural workers.
