The 23-time Grand Slam singles winner appeared on an episode of Hot Ones last week and talked about how her finances took a backseat to her love of the game. Evans asked Williams if a rumored story — that she once tried to cash a million-dollar check at an ATM but was refused at the machine — was true. Williams said it was.
“I never played for money. I played because I loved the sport, I wanted to be the best, I wanted to win,” Williams said. “I got my check and it was $1 million and I said 'Okay, I'm going to deposit it,' I've never spent a lot of money … I just drove by and the guy was like, 'Uh, I think you should come in for it.”
The tennis pro also said that, early in her career, she often forgot to collect her first cheque.
″(He) would say, 'You didn't get your money?' And I say, 'Oh, I didn't get that in Zurich. I forgot about that in Moscow,” Williams said of Evans. “I was playing to win, and if I didn't win, I wasn't thinking. I was so angry that I wanted to find a way to improve and win next time.”
