A few months after Dell hit remote work doing it impossible for remote workers to get a promotion, the tech company is now monitoring how often hybrid employees slip into its US offices.

Dell will take into account the frequency of employee badge swipes and assign a flag color to keep track of: blue, green, yellow or red. The color of the flag will help determine how hybrid employees are reviewed, rewarded and compensated at the end of the quarter, for a internal memo taken from Business Insider.

Dell began tracking attendance on May 6; Employees began seeing their weekly site visit data on Dell's Workday HR platform on Monday, according to the memo.

The more employees who come to work in person, the better the color of a corresponding workday flag that reflects their participation.

Dell Brand Blue Flags are the highest rank and indicate that an employee has spent at least 39 days in the office per quarter, or an average of about 3 days per week.

Green flags are “regular presence in the country”, yellow flags are “some presence in the country”, and red flags are “limited presence in the country”, in descending order.

Dell employees reported anonymously that they felt like they were back at school.

“HR will maintain an attendance report card for employees, grading them on four levels,” a source said registry.

Other anonymous sources at Dell reported feeling disenchanted with the tech company at one time a leader in remote work.

“Dell is not the place it used to be where employees were respected and valued,” a Dell employee told BI. “There are so many people who are demoralized and will be hurt by this policy.”

The number of Dell employees has been decreasing since 2020, when it reached 165,000 employees. As of this year, Dell had about 120,000 employees, per statesman.

Dell first called employees into the office Februarywriting in an internal memo that “career advancement, including applying for new roles at the company, will require a team member to reclassify as hybrid in place.”

Employees hypothesized at the time that the policy might be a way to quietly fire people behind Dell laid off thousands last year. A Dell source pulled data on the makeup of remote teams and found the policy would “overwhelmingly” affect women.

Dell did not immediately respond The entrepreneurRequest for comment.
