The TikTok CEO is an honorary chair at the 2024 Met Gala

The Met Gala red carpet live streaming starts at 18:00 on Monday, May 6.

This year's theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Awakening Fashion“, which celebrates the Costume Institute's new exhibit. Official Co-Chairs (and Honorary Chairs) of the 2024 Met Gala were announced in February, and an unexpected businessman will join Conde Nast Global Editor Anna Wintour at the annual event.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is an honorary “first Monday in May” chair at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The social media platform is sponsoring the May 6 event alongside fashion house Loewe's creative director Jonathan Anderson.

This marks the first time a social media executive will hold the title at the annual gala.

This year's co-hosts are Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya and Chris Hemsworth.

Chew's selection isn't out of left field—Wintour is known for selecting people she considers most culturally relevant at the time. There are approx 150 million TikTok users in the US, and it has definitely become a massive part of culture and business.
