Star of Country Jelly Roll, The 39-year-old is having a banner year, but a lawsuit filed last week in Pennsylvania court claims his past reputation is causing “irreparable harm” to a local group.
A wedding band based in Chadds Ford, Penn., a town outside of Philadelphia, called “Jellyroll” is suing the country musician for trademark infringement and “unfair competition.”
The group, which has been around since the 1980s, claims to own the trademark for the name and has sent Jelly Roll (country singer) and his crew a restraining order to change its stage name.
The Jelly Roll team responded by email to discuss, according to the lawsuit.
“Several conversations ensued and at one point the defendant's attorney asked if the defendant was really in competition with the plaintiff,” the lawsuit states.
But the talks didn't work out, and the 80s wedding band is claiming that Google search results for Jelly Roll's past harm their business.
“Unrepentant defendants' continued acts and conduct, unless enjoined by this Court, will continue to cause consumer confusion, error and deception,” the suit, which was obtained by FOX Business, claims. “Due to the defendant's troubled past, which includes a felony conviction and imprisonment, such association as stated above has caused additional harm to the plaintiff among the public and the trade.”
Roll jelly was in and out of prison for 10 years starting aged 14 for a range of charges including aggravated robbery, drug possession and shoplifting.
It is marked in the lawsuit that Jelly Roll (the singer) has a space in his name while the band has their name as one word.
