Dollar General Store closes after all staff leave

A Dollar General store in Wisconsin was forced to temporarily close after the entire staff walked out last week due to a “lack of appreciation,” including low pay and an “immoral” food donation policy, a note left at the door.

IN photos of signage posted in the windows of the Mineral Point, Wisconsin, Dollar General, employees cite that “the entire team” (six employees) decided to leave, thanking customers.

“We cannot and will not work for a company that does not stand behind the true, honest form of what they want the world to see,” the statement said. “While we love and adore our customers, we must take a stand for the community and not allow Corporate Greed to (continue to) prevent people who need it from the help they need and can get.”

Dollar General said the store was only closed for about three hours Saturday before reopening at 11 a.m.

By Monday, the store was operating with a full staff of new and transferred workers.

One former employee, Trina Tribolet, said she had only had one weekend off since Christmas and claimed the store only donated food to local pantries under “very specific guidelines”.

“We're throwing away coffee that hasn't expired, but it's close. Or you're throwing away a box of Lucky Charms that you know there's a whole world of kids out there that would love to eat them,” Tribolet told local media. Spectrum News 1. “But you can't donate them because you're supposed to throw them away. There were tears that were shed … It's disgusting and it's sad, especially for someone who has morals.”

In response to Tribolet, Dollar General told the newspaper it is continuing to follow Feeding America's guidelines.

“The Mineral Point Dollar General Store has donated nearly 7,500 pounds of food to local food banks such as the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin over the past twelve months,” the spokesperson told the media. “Food safety is a top priority for Dollar General and Feeding America members, therefore, DG stores must follow Feeding America's donation policies.”
